Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need to have experience?
Not at all. Many people join with no experience while others have years of sailing behind them.
What is the time commitment?
What you make of it. Once your paperwork is in and you’ve paid your dues, we want you to sail as much as you want. If you’re wanting to be more competitive, practicing at least twice a week is beneficial. There is no minimum time commitment. And we do have purely social members.
Where/when do you practice?
We practice at Acton Lake in Hueston Woods. Practice times vary, but it’s usually weekday afternoons and anytime Saturday.
Can I try sailing before I commit?
Yes you can. You can go to a learn-to-sail session before joining.
What type of boats do you sail?
FJs and 420’s mostly in college racing. We sometimes have the opportunity to sail bigger boats at other regattas: Sonar, Flying Scot, Colgate 26 and J105.
Do I need to buy equipment?
No. We would not recommend buying anything quite yet. If you have it already, that’s great, but it’s not necessary. We would recommend eventually purchasing a PFD as you are not allowed on team boats without one. But we do have some extras/people who can share so you don’t have to buy one right away. Spray gear, gloves, boots, etc. are all optional, but beneficial.
How do regattas work?
Leave Friday for registration get together. Sailing starts bright and early Saturday morning. There will be at least four people from our team at every regatta. First, A division will go out and sail two races. Then B division will go out and sail two races. We rotate like that through out the day and again on Sunday. At the end of the regatta there will be awards in A division and B division and then overall. Leave on Sunday. It costs $10 for the weekend.
